This is the Yamaha SMAX 155 cc scooter hands-down, one of my favorite scooters. Fourteen point eight horsepower ten foot-pounds of torque. It is a fuel-injected 155 CC scooter with this brakes. In the front, it has a twin piston caliper up in the front and It’s single piston caliper in the rear, but it does have this brakes front and rear. That’s a huge thing is, but it really does help stop this scooter because it is actually a pretty quick scooter specifically for its size. This thing has a seat height of 31.3 inches and comes with a two gallon fuel tank and wet weight, meaning fuel oil antifreeze. It weighs in at 329 pounds now when you’re talking about the Yamaha SMAX similar scooters that are, in this scooters, a price range and CC you’re going to be looking at Honda. PCX150 s, you’re going to be looking at possibly Zuma, 125 and then, in addition to that, you’ll be looking at something than the Kymco line.

All About the Yamaha SMAX

I haven’t had a lot of seat time on it yet, so I can’t speak to it specifically. But if we’re going to talk about the big names, we’re going to talk about Honda and we’re going to talk about Yamaha again, the Zuma 125 would be in the same range and also the PCH 150, when you’re dealing with either the PCX 150 Honda.

When you’re riding the Honda PCX 150, I do have a couple complaints that they are super popular scooters and that’s solely, in my opinion, part due to the fact that the Honda actually markets their scooters. You don’t see a lot of marketing coming out of the Yamaha side of things for realistically any of their and I think That’s detriment to themselves that they would actually market their scooters. Like the Vino, the Zuma everybody knows, but the scooters like the B. No, I think the Vino would have outsold the metropolitan Fe Yamaha would have marketed these SMAX’s.

Similar to the Honda PCX?

These things would have outsold the Honda PCX, It’s just an all-around, more comfortable rod. I do have one complaint about the SMAX, especially in comparison of the PC at 150. This area right here on the Yamaha, is a little bit tight like. If I want to have my legs tucked in there, I would be touching the dad and not only that, but I don’t have a lot of forward foot. They do have these highway, whatever they are, but It’s even less comfortable than the actual see the footing position. So one quick way to fix that is: there is a guy that makes Highway pegs for these. That will put your feet out here. A set of those would do a long way on one of these and would really make it a lot more comfortable. In my opinion, doing that would make this hands-down the best scooter in that middleweight class of scooters.

How Fast Is It?

That 125, we’ll call it a 200 cc class you’re, not going to, have to pick up and go like. You went on something like say: the Honda reflex to 50’s or the fourth or 300, but there again you’re also doing with a much larger chassis scooter. For this one 55 by Yamaha, it isn’t all that much larger and a 50cc speed. Now we look at Honda’s fifties a Honda’s with these are always super small they’re, really little scooters put the other brands, the genuine and basically the genuine and the hills, and even the Kymco 50 they’re much larger bodied scooters It’s very similar in size. It is 155, so that really makes this thing handy. It’s That’s especially for college campus parking for beach parking realistically anywhere, especially if you’re an inner city commuter. These things are great to be able to park in our city now. Here’s the next reason why I really enjoy the Yamaha SMAX over the PCX 150. This thing is foam stuff outside of having been serviced. It’s not a thing done to the scooter and we’re pulling it 73 MPH. Well right now, 72. But these things have a cruising speed of 73 miles per hour. That’s honestly, the fastest I’ve had one. I have one previously too, had some exhaust modifications done to it, and we saw 73 miles per hour that that is absolutely cooking fast.

Stock Yamaha SMAX

On a scooter like this and that’s bone stock, I actually had a customer of mine who had a PC X, 150, brand-new 20120 PC accent the first time it came to us. It had just over like a hundred and four miles, something like that on it, and his complaint was that he couldn’t get it up to speed my maximum speed on that scooter straight downhill. I saw bone stock was 63. Now we did some work for him and we did some other stuff, but we still only saw 67 miles per hour. That was my absolute maximum of 73 miles per hour on a 155 CC scooter. That’s amazing and It’s honestly, one of the biggest reason why I like the SMAX again yet in addition to that, here’s a couple things that you’re talking about that PCX.

How’s the Ride?

I really don’t like It’s the seats really hard on those. It’s not a very comfortable rod, and not only that, but it just feels she makes especially in comparison to this, like the s-max. If they ask max is just seem really well put together. I do not like how this windshield is separated and it looks kind of funky from depending on what angle you’re at other than that. I really don’t have any complaints about these acts and actors, especially as far as the design goes. If you want to talk about, if I really want to get nitpicky and talk about the things that really they start to bug me, the facts, the driver’s seat on this thing does have a pillion built into instead of being a nice flat seat across a pillion here and that prevents you from sliding back which honest good like this. I don’t really see the reason to have that extra support, but it does make it cumbersome for a rider like myself. Where again, you know, I can start to feel uncomfortable on this thing because of the limited floor board and then with the block off of the seat, where, if I could just slide back, you know three or four inches. That makes a huge difference, but then I’m sitting on a hard, backrest I’ll kill you.

So you have to take the good with the bad. Another thing that I really like that Yamaha did, they did into an RPM or tachometer. You don’t see that on scooters very often it is pretty cool to actually watch that, especially if you get into any kind of tuning on this thing, actually knowing what RPM you’re at is a pretty killer feature. Specifically again, I know it sounds like I’m just thrashing PCX. You know we have to use a remote or an add-on, rpm gauge, and it they aren’t a hundred percent accurate, the ones that we use just because they’re quick on they just It’s more or less of a ballpark rpm gauge so another place for the Yamaha again. Realistically, It’s not all that much different than the PCX 50 they’re, both pretty nimble scooters and they both handled fairly nicely. I do think that as far as rotting, this thing on the road, meaning that as I’m going down the road you know, especially here in central Pennsylvania, we do have a lot of bumpy roads. I do feel like the s-max does: take the roads a little bit nicer, just as far as the but feel I don’t feel like I’m getting beat up as much, and I think It’s a little bit of a heavier scooter, a little better suspension. That does that. For us in comparison to the PCX and when we’re going to go.

Like the Zuma?

Zuma came on the bug-eyed Zuma, That’s how we first got introduced to them. That’s the honestly one of our best selling scooters and one of the scooters we do the most work to is the optic that set the bug-eyed Yamaha Zuma’s. That’s for the for the United States models. It’s a two stroke model super popular model, and once I knew that once I knew that they made a Zuma 125. I could not wait to get my hands on literally spent hours searching for one. That was the right deal and I ended up getting one and was completely let down by it, not a very fast scooter. Really. I don’t think if I think It’s Zuma 125 we’ll have to do the comparison in one day, but a Zuma 125 versus a bug-eye which is the heavier of the two-stroke 50 Zuma’s, but a Zuma 125 versus a bug-eye with a 70 CC kit on it, and not Even a crazy 70 CC kit on it, I’m just talking a mild sport bill 70 CC kit. I think the Zuma in certain aspects takes it and I think, outside of that, the 120, the sorry the Zuma 50 takes it.

But outside of that, I don’t really think the 125 is going to be. You know, ripping ahead or really showing It’s showing anything any kind of real advantage anywhere throughout. So that was my first thing with the doom 125. The next thing on the zoom 125 that I haven’t had a real liking to is again the seating position. That’s one thing: Yamaha needs to work on you’re, really not going to get any better seat on the zoom 125 than you are on this SMAX. So That’s just another way that That’s just another feature that I think Yamaha needs to improve upon, especially now that they are getting out of the 50 cc game is on these middleweight crew middleweight scooters. They need to get something better done as far as the as far as the seating in the floorboard coat other than that when you’re talking to the zoom 125, I mean. Obviously, this thing does have an extra 30 CC’s in the engine and that does make a difference, but it shouldn’t be that Jurassic with difference. I mean this is a very peppy scooter. Honestly, the very first time I rode one of these s, Max’s my first come and when I got back was that thing is so wicked fast, especially for the braking.

Now that mine did have some work done to it. When I first wrote it, but still you should you would be blown away at how much fun these are. I would even put money on a very good rider on an SMAX versus a novice rider on a 600 on any backward mountain road. You can find. I put my money on the F max all day. I mean this thing just handles like a sport bike, so we are pulling in here now. So I’m going to pause this and come back here in a minute.

When you’re dealing with that Zuma, like I said It’s a real lackluster motor and again, you would be absolutely shocked that you got behind one of these, especially if you’ve never been on a scooter, just mainly because of the sides. The Bergman’s. A lot of people really aren’t shocked with and only resented the Bergman’s just because It’s such a large scooter and for the larger CC scooters that are available for purchase. Typically, when someone gets off a Birdman for the first time. Their comment isn’t about the speed. Their comments about the you know just the general ride itself and how comfortable it is, and then, in addition to that, their comments are in regard to their surprised, how what they’re surprised with how well it handled. You look at something. That’s that big, and you almost expect it to have a lot of power and be you know, motorcycle, ask as far as the speed goes just again because of how large they are where, when you’re looking at this thing, It’s deceiving, like I said before. It’s it Looks like a 50 cc scooter has a chassis of a 50 cc scooter. So when you get on this thing and it has the acceleration, it does and it has the and it has the top speed that it does.

A lot of people are shocked and again most of the time scooters especially of this side. They struggle with hills. It’s a struggle because of like they’d are available at 150, but they don’t. They don’t take those It’s exceptionally well, you’ll notice, at least a five to ten mile per hour, drop-off on a large enough grade where, with a scooter like this, really I mean this thing has enough snot to get it done. As far as when you’re looking at the on this side, when we first started here so if you’re still with me, we’ll go over that now again tachometer here, rpm gauge individuals, so you can see which side you have stuck on turn signal nice fuel gauge here, Nice fuel gauge here, you do have a trip meter. You also have an oil change counter here and then, in addition to that, you have your odometer as well as your clock.

It also does have this real nice, big leg, storage, compartment and then, in addition to that, you do have a locking gas cap here. So that is where you’re going to fill this thing up with fuel, definitely a little unconventional. But It’s really not that bad and as long as you’re doing it on the center stand, it’s really not all that much risk. In addition to normal to fill the few up under seat storage wise. These things have a nice large under seat storage area, not necessarily the deepest under seat storage, storage area, but it does have a large under seat storage area. The battery is located underneath the trunk. It has this really nice mechanism, no spare key. You just turn your key, all the way to the left and it pops the trunk up other than that it is as far as your controls going.

This thing you do have high beam, low beam and then you’ll see here it does say pass and what that does is actually flashes. Your high beam turn signals are just like any other motorcycle right and left and pushing the cancel orange, and then it does have your toe switch here. So essentially It’s the same operation as a motorcycle rear brake, except for where your clutch would be. You have a rear, brake and then your front brake is still on your right and That’s always mirror wise one other thing that I typically find It’s wrong with screws and where I don’t have, the problem on the s9 is actually being able to see out of This mirror the s-max does have a nice time here, so you can actually see behind you most of the time. My shoulders in the blocking most of the mirrors on scooters. So that is one cool thing. Another nice feature of the s-max is that this bar is just how do they clamp so, in the event you ever did want to switch whether you wanted a lower bar the higher bar, a straighter bar any bar variation. You want can easily be achieved. You just remove this silver cover here and then it exposes a clamp for your bar, so you can switch those out so whatever kind of bar you’re most comfortable with home.

What is the Price

As far as purchasing these as go brand-new, I want to say these things are in the $4000range. Take this thing with these, just because of the suspension, because of the seating position. I mean notice here I’m not going to let off the throttle at all to go through this next hair pin turn. No, this is a real big term, but it showed you the student does handle really well, It’s just a nice sweeping turn, but you know this thing. You can get as aggressive or an integral activated as you want when it comes to turn and here is another one. You can just barrel right through this turn no issues at all. As far as the pricing goes on the used market, these things are pretty rarity in the wild and That’s not in part to the fact that is not a good scooter. It’s in large part due to the fact again, Yamaha didn’t advertise these things well, they should have put them out there and they should have made people aware that they exists.

Very often, people don’t even know about the Yamaha SMAX and its the reason for it hands down one of the best on the market. But when you are seeing them in the wild and out on the market. Our price range, depending on the year in the mall. You can find these scooters for cheapest $ 3,500, although once you’re getting into that price point, you’re really going to have a lot of miles on to it or It’s going to happen. The only real downfall to the s-max is the fact that this does require a motorcycle license and in most states almost every state. I think I don’t really know of any state that doesn’t require mirrors for this.

So maybe there is a little bit of room for improvement. There are ways of you know launches through there, but this is a my scooter. This is a customer scooter, so I really don’t feel It’s necessary to abuse it . Just now, It’s a pretty snippy little spirit, see if we can get a top speed out of it here to real-time down, maybe we’ll be able to see that majestic 73 MPH only 72, maybe 73. So this is a nice area here to show the climbing ability of a scooter just because this is a nice Hill and you do have to get a pretty decent slowdown to go up it. But I mean this car in front of me is probably going to. Do the speed the minute but looks of it, I might be able to catch him here, but you can see this thing’s. Only uphill is still pulling our It’s still pulling speed, which is not very typical of these middleweight scooters, I mean not to say they don’t climb at all, but you’re definitely not going to accelerate this much. I mean we’re climbing hills here and we’re getting up to 54 miles an hour, I suppose, to wrap things up. I will show you how the seat works once we get back to the shop.

It is a great really peppy scooter a fun scooter. Most people don’t associate all that much fun with a scooter, but this gear really is a fun scooter to rod. If you’re going to, compare it to the closest size, motorcycle will be the Honda Grom myself. Personally, I would take a Yamaha Zuma over a Honda. Grom every day of the week that ends is why, just because they really aren’t that fast, while you are shifting, but at the end of the day, if you’re on something that that that It’s that slow.

How is it Compared to the Honda Grom?

, It’s kind of cumbersome to shift and I much prefer just to get on an automatic like this when you’re on that small of a cc bike. Not only that, but when we’re talking about that Honda Grom this SMAX which mocha Honda Grom take on Honda Grom on the highway, they aren’t 70-mile for how our motorcycle this Yamaha SMAX. This does 70 miles out. This is technically a highway legal motorcycle, so suit up and you crack some miles on. So we are going to go up here and I am going to show you just how the backseat or does operate so that way, you know in case you’re. Looking for one. Sorry for not doing it sooner but better late than never. I suppose one other feature.

That’s really nice with the SMAX is, it does have a kickstand, so you can park the bike like that and it does have a I understand boom. But at any rate, let’s show you how this thing works here. So if you wanted to start the screw, you turn the key there right. If you want to open your key turn the key directly to the left and that pops up and showed you this really nice large under seat storage area battery compartment here.
