Thinking About Getting a Honda PCX?

This is the 2020 Honda PCX scooter. The ergonomics, suspension, braking and power are great. I know this bike is not designed for these country lanes with national speed limits, but you might as well have some fun. I feel the power. We will give it a little bit of a top speed run here. If we can get up to top speed. That is, we might run out of road, don’t think for a minute, this bikes going to be fast, fifty-five at least. We are flat-out at 58 MPH, I’m sure. If you’re lighter smaller, you might get a few more miles an hour out of this. I’m keeping it absolutely pinned wide open and it’s his fun. You can keep pinned down these empty roads. It’s silly that has not moved my hand, has not moved off full and I’ve got to slow down here.

Let’s Talk About the Brakes

Oh, I only use the front brake there and that’s pretty good. Let’s talk about the brakes whatever on here, the brakes are up on the top here. You’ve got a front brake on the right and the rear brake is on the left. As per all scooters. It’s got ABS now. Last year or the model before didn’t have ABS, but for 2020 it has ABS. I’m not 100 %, sure that’s front and rear. So, Let’s give it a little bit of a test, we’ll  do it from 40 miles an hour, There’s nothing behind us and if you buy a scooter or this sort of thing in London, you’re going to be testing the brakes. A lot trust me: people do pull out right. It’s a forty miles an hour front, brake Wow. Do you know what that is pretty impressive? You could hear just the slight squeal on the front brake as it came to a stop, but it Didn’t get out of shape. Didn’t feel weird or anything that was brilliant right, Let’s get up to about 25 and then use the rear. If I can there we go: Let’s do thirty, thirty rear right. Definitely, no ABS on the back! We’ve sorted that out right! So now I know ABS on the front only won’t to let me tell you a little bit about the ergonomics.

The Honda PCX Scooter Ergonomics

It is quite small. It is a 150cc scooter, so I wasn’t really expecting that much more. As I said in that little intro bit, my legs are quite long, my fiber and It’s very long, so I tend to sit right back on a bike, no matter what bike my CRF, 250r, basically sitting on the rear seat. So that gives you an idea of how far I like to sit back on this. There is a little hump in the seat, so I can’t go back as far as I want to go. But having said that, It’s not uncomfortable and I will get used to it.

The beauty of a scooter like this over one. Do you just put your feet in the middle? Is you have got some wiggle room for your feet? You’ve got two positions you can put them forward like this. Now, like my legs like that, and that is actually pretty comfortable – I mean It’s not perfect, because I would like to go back slightly more, but It’s good and if you want a bit more feeling when you ride around corners when you’re throwing it around, you can Stick your feet back here and that just gives you a little bit more maneuverability, so you have got the choice.

The seat two bars is okay, a little bit tight when you turn it when you’re on full lock, hit my legs or just over my legs. So a little bit weird, but you can adjust it. If you take these off here, I’m sure there’s some screws under there, so you can move the handlebar slightly back. Just to give you a little bit more room if you wish the seat so far is pretty comfortable, although It’s perching me too far forward for my liking, the actual material and the softness of it is okay. It’s not soft, and It’s not hard, and it is A new bike, so it will bed into, could be slightly softer, but I could imagine you can do quite a bit distance on this.

Although many people won’t do more than an hour at a time. Commute in, I wouldn’t mind riding this all day. To be honest, but in its a bike I, like riding bikes, I’d ride any bike all day. If I could, if my backside allows me to – and I think this would be alright, let me test the pillion seat for you. This is how tall I am bright. This is not a normal test. So don’t try this at home folks, but we stick that peg out there and we stick that peg out there and then I put my feet up here and I’m sitting on the back now. This is what the pit would look like. This is It’s pretty comfortable up here I mean you would have a ride there here to block the wind, but only no, the pillion speed is pretty comfortable.

It wasn’t really. I was just sitting on the backseat rider. I look down every now and again, but It’s no different from going like that. Look at that tree, that’s not dangerous. I know There’s nothing in front of me for a quite a while and I’ve looked in my mirrors and There’s nothing behind me so chill out. Why we’re talking about the mirrors, yeah they’re, pretty good? You can see a little bit of my elbows, but can mainly see behind. So you can see people sneaking up on you, so that’s good and they’re adjustable just buy it.

Fiddling with this wind screen doesn’t really do a lot. Keeps the rain off the clocks and this little bit chrome here, but not much more than that. It’s pushing the wind sort of out under my neck into my chest, but It’s kind of a pure win. It’s not buffeting at all, so It’s not too bad. I wouldn’t expect hurt this to do anything really, especially at my height I mean if you’re about two foot, six, you might get away with it, but at six foot two now It’s not going to happen, but Let’s take this down some country and we’re test the Suspension.

Handling and Suspension

We test their handling of this bike, although this bike It’s not made for handling It’s not. Is it really, but It’s a commuter through London through big cities but, as you know, with these reviews, I’m going to test them where I like to ride. So that’s what we’re going to do, because I like to have fun and that to me is what motorcycling is about yeah. You can have for motorcycling for a necessity the commuting, because you have to because the prices are London, parking, etc. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take a little thing like this out of the weekend on your day off and have a little bit of a play. You can do that on any bike.

Is it Fun?

Don’t let journalists fool you into thinking. You need a certain type of bike for fun, you don’t you can have fun on anything. Alright, There’s nothing behind me. So Let’s just switch that to there and what I’ve done. There is use this switch here now I’ve got idling stop on, which means this should cut out in a minute there you go, I was going to say, can you hear that, but obviously conchs is cut out and basically what that is? It’s stop start like on a car when you come to a standstill, the engine cuts out to save fuel and then, when you twist the throttle the engine kicks back in again and off you go. You’ve got the choice of putting it on or off. That’s up to you, I found with it on, if you’re, in a mega, quick rush to get away from the front of the traffic, It’s a little bit of a delay before the engine kicks in and off you go. So if you are doing sort of like a quick getaway, if you are trying to hustle your way through and harass the traffic, then I will turn it off and use it in normal mode, because if you switch it off, then It’s just a normal scooter twist and go.

There’s: none of this stop and start malarkey, just a little brief one on the suspension on roads like this. It’s really good. It’s very, very smooth. I’ve been told, they’ve stiffened up the back a little bit weather that so they can get the food boxes on the back, so they can get the deliveries to you. I don’t know, but I would assume so because this is probably the number one bike when it comes to food deliveries. If you probably won’t see many scooter reviews going down roads like this, but we do like to be different on this channel and the handling is so good.

This is a little scooter. This is not a bike, but it handles more like a bike. It’s not It’s weird, it doesn’t handle like a normal scooter. The handling is pretty good because It’s got those thin tires on and they’ve beefed up the suspension slightly. It handles change of direction really well and, as I said, I’m a big lump, so I should compress it more than the average 150cc scooter rider. Maybe I’ll have to test this of my other bumpy country lane, but cruising around. It’s really nice to cruise around on the engine is really smooth.

150cc Engine

This is a single cylinder scooter and you know most of them are smooth, but I’ve had 150cc scooters in the past and I don’t remember them being like this. This is an awesome little scooter, It’s  good, honest, have a little look at the dash as we go under here. So that’s how it would light up at night. So It’s a lovely LCD. Okay. Why are we here I’ll tell you a little bit about it. It has been changed for this year. This model has an LCD which is white on black background, with some various information underneath with the buttons down here. I shall go fully through this when we do the walk around, but it is nice I like it considering. This is a real inexpensive bike. Do you know what its build quality feels really good? It feels like It’s put together well, and this is a real budget bike and then I know I’ll say this on some bikes, but this is under four grand US. You get all this for under $4000; abs, stop-start, LCD screen, pretty good tires, pretty good suspension.

So far, I can’t really fault it. I mean this bike is so light and agile. You can virtually bring it to a standstill without even worrying about putting your feet down. This balance is amazing right. So here we go my test road. I love this road for tests and suspension and handling. Normally I come down there on much quicker bikes, but we’re going to have some fun there, but unless now this is a 60 miles an hour road. We should be alright, and I kind of like the fact that both the brakes are up here. You can adjust the line using the back brake just right with your finger like that. It’s pretty good! This saves you worrying about your feet. A lot of many people worry about their feet, but I’m just saying they are a bit overgrown.

You can tell the motors kicking in. It’s handling the bumps pretty well, you can feel the bumps, but It’s not trying to knock your fillings out, and these tires are brilliant. These tires really are good on this type of bike. This type of scooter they haven’t gone with cheap tires and that’s a massive bonus. This suspension is doing a really good job of soaking up the imperfections in this road. I mean It’s not perfect, but I wasn’t expecting perfect. I was expecting this to jump around all over the place, but It’s not it’s good.

I’m actually, in shock a little bit, I’ve been a little bit of shock that I’m on an automatic 150cc scooter, one other cheek ones. Basically, you only ever see this bike coming to your door to deliver your food and I’m amazed by it now. I know why my food is so hot when it comes to my door, It’s because they probably ride like this everywhere they go. Yes, my conclusion on the handling the suspension on this is quite astonishing. I was not expecting that I was expecting this to be more wallowing, more kind of hinging, the middle some scooters, a feeling like they’ve, got a hinge in the middle because the engines on the back wheel, but this Wow. I really am impressed. I can’t get across to you how impressed I am that I’m on a little scooter again down a road like that, and I didn’t once fear for my life.

Let’s have a quick look at the bike before we head back, I’m going to show you around. It tires wheels, suspension, etc. under the seat switch gear we just get through it. This is a lovely color. By the way, this is a metallic black. It’s very maneuverable, so in traffic, the smaller wheels that eyes and thinner wheels are much better brake. Likewise, on the front is a single disc and it is ABS, which is new for this year. The last model was not abs, so it is abs on the front and as we worked out earlier, there is no ABS on the back and It’s a drum. It is actually a drum brake on the back. That’ll be one There’s no ABS, but there you go. Why so on the front, suspension is just your standard, no more Forks, quite thin, just basically a pair of folks on the scope, nothing special! You got two suspensions on the back, not a single one. I don’t think they’re adjustable at all. No they’re not, but I don’t really need it. It took my weight quite well.

Even when I was riding pillion, it was fine, so it takes your box on the back with all your food. So don’t worry about ordering too much. The suspension will take it all right. So, Let’s run through the lights. I just quickly turn that on. I don’t know whether you’re going to see it in this light on the front full LEDs with these wonderful running lights. I love the front of this bike. To me I mean don’t harass me in the comment section, but I think this light setup is one of the best I’ve seen on any bike. I think It’s a really good design, I’m not sure how bright is at night or what it looks like because we’re in the sunshine. So I can’t test that, but actually looking at it and I’ve seen a lot of these Honda PCX scooters coming towards me when I’m commuting and I think they look absolutely brilliant.

LED Lights

So a quick look at the indicators I’m assuming there is that bulb over the bulb. They’re little LEDs there, so they’re very bright, they’re, quite good. You need bright LEDs, not that anyone pays attention in traffic, so when you’re indicating a turn, but you know what I mean on the back again: full LEDs You’ve got these two kind of running lights and the top one. That’s not let up at the moment is your brake light and obviously you indicate It’s the one that’s flashing LEDs again and that looks pretty smart as well.

Storage

Alright, so Let’s have a little look under the seat and where the fuel goes, I’ve got that on stage one so she’ll be able to open it. Yet that’s you fuel and that’s just a twist. That’s not lockable from the that point of view, but that bit is and you get to it by pressing fuel right under the seat. It’s a pretty good storage, not too bad. Let’s just straighten her up put that right back got a tool kit there a little bungee. So you can stick that under there.

You can get a full-face crash helmet under there and some other bits here. It’s pretty good storage. Actually, considering this is a commuter you can get quite a bit of stuff under there and if you are going away for the weekend, then You’ve got a back box put on here, because this panel will come off and It’s go all the attachments there to put Back and back box on there put a bear box on there.

You get plenty of stuff under the seat and in the back box you can go away for the weekend. There’s no problem with that. You won’t get there quickly, but at least you can do it right. You’ve got a little cubby hole here, which is quite deep. It’s not too bad. It looks very wrong when I did that you could put your phone keys or wet every now. I don’t know what I’m telling you what’s putting it you could put in there whatever fits basically. You’ve also got a 12-volt power outlet there, which is handy, and I think you should have power outlets on every single bike. We go through the switch gear on this side.

You’ve got your back brake here. You’ve got your full beams here and your normal beams You’ve got your hooter and your indicators so bad it for that side. On this side you got your front brake your throttle. You got hazard lights and you got your engine start here. Your starter up here you got idling and idling stop, and what this is your stop-start system. If you keep it on idling, it runs as a normal scooter if you put it on idling stop. That brings in your stop-start system, and I should show you on a dashboard how you know that’s on.

Gauges and Controls

Let’s do the startup sequence and there you go obviously still got a hazard flashers on right on the dash. I don’t actually know if you can see this. I hope you can right. The dashboard is now LCD, rather than analog, It’s a nice clock. Actually, It’s very nice I’ll do like this. In the middle, you’ve got your big speedo. There. You’ve got your time. You’ve got fuel gauge and You’ve got a little computer down here, which is your average and down. Here are your miles, your total miles, which is on 48 at the moment. Let’s play around with that and see what it does right down the bottom here. Here’s your trips, so You’ve only got one trip. You’ve got total miles on one trip and up here is just got average miles per gallon which is very good. I don’t know if you can change that, I’m trying to fiddle around with these buttons, but it only seems to be changing the one at the bottom, the trip one.

Maybe you can change that. I don’t know: you’ll have to check the specifications down below check the Honda website and see what they say: other lights on the dashboard on this side. You’ve got full beam light energy management. You’ve got a left indicator and on this side, a right indicator. Oh, you knew that was coming. You’ve got your start/stop down here: engine temperature ABS, which will go off at five miles an hour right, so I’ve just flicked that on which is idling stop and that flash debut saw that that’s just letting you know It’s on. So to start it you just hold in the brake and press the starter motor. Now this is a very quiet, starter motor. It’s not actually starting my I’m, not sure how it works. It doesn’t feel like a starter motor.

Battery

Because It’s got start/stop, it doesn’t want to drain the battery. So, they’ve got some system in place where it doesn’t actually draw too much from the battery like normal start/stop. If the battery does get a little bit of low, it cut that out anyway, but you don’t have to use idling stop I mean if you want to save fuel use it, but if you’re in a rush I’ll, stick it in idling just because it gives you That little bit more to get away with from the lights, It’s more instant if You’ve got it on idling rather than stop start because on stop start, It’s obviously got a kicking gear start and then go. I mean it happens in milliseconds, but just for me I would leave it in idling for quick blasts around, but for everyday riding, probably idling stop to save a bit of money. I mean this thing: I’m not sure what it does miles per gallon, but I’m sure It’s probably about a billion that might be an exaggeration.

Well, this bike also comes with a center stand as standard, which is handy. An aside stand, if you put that down, it should cut out, like all scooters, yep does cut the engine. So that’s good to know you can’t ride off with your side standard down, which is a never a good thing. Engine is on the back wheel, as you can see here. It’s on the side like scooter, so this is all part of the engine. Your back walls directly driven by this, which is a belt again check the specifications below and that will sort like show you all of that.

Oh there are the pillion pegs and they’re, pretty good. I thought they were rubber, but they’re, not they’re plastic, but when I was sitting on the back seat there and I’m a feet on there, it felt perfectly fine.

At the moment you get a free data tool, tracker system with it, so you get a tracker on it. I think It’s worth about 200 bucks and they throw that in with the bike, with all the bikes now so go down to doable, to speak to the salesman there. That’s how you all about there you do have to pay a subscription fee. I think It’s about. Around 20 dollars a month to keep it tracked so to speak, but that might be a little bit worth peace of mind and also that would bring your insurance down a little bit as well, because we all know insurance is creeping up and up and up so every Little thing that helps bring it down is a bonus right.

What I forgot to mention in that I was just about write off then I just remembered It’s got a little bit of a security system on here as well. So if you do that turn it all the way to lock put the steering lock on this little bit here it blanks over the key, so you can’t get a screwdriver in there to start it, and this little thing here, you just dab it in there. He says there easily yeah, you just dab it in there and turn it, and it opens the key back up. So you can stick the key back in so there you go another little bit of added security. Idling stop now, so we got to stop start on because I’m just sort of that chilling out and we just relaxing and just basically going for a cruise back to the shop. So, there we go we’re seeing a 50, which is the speed limit for this road, and It’s perfectly fine.

It’s a perfectly adequate place to be It’s comfortable. The wind blast is pure, It’s not too bad. There’s no buffeting! It’s got a little bit more power on tap, not a lot, but a little bit more. It will sit at this speed. 50, probably 55 miles an hour all day long. I mean it might go up and down depending on the incline, but on the whole 50 miles an hour is a pretty sweet speed for this 40. Definitely no problem, and most of these things are going to be around town anyway, so they won’t go anywhere near that speed, as you can see, we’re keeping up with traffic no problem whatsoever, but then I wouldn’t expect it not to.

Conclusion

Let’s get on with the summary. I suppose we should do that and you’re, probably not going to be shocked, to know that the summary is pretty good. So, Let’s start with the ergonomics. Ergonomics are probably the weakest point of this bike. For me, the It’s a bit cramped. For me, I mean yeah. It’s got a beauty of the different positions for the legs so forward or back so you have got a choice and I like that in a scooter, but It’s just this seat is pretty comfy. Perching me too far forward for my comfort. Apart from that, It’s okay to handlebars, I could do with probably being there, but we can adjust them by fiddling around with age. Probably maybe even get some bar risers on there and bring them up slightly to make it a little bit more comfortable. It’s more adjustable than normal scooters. Most scooters don’t have adjustable handlebars, but this does so that could be worked on, but It’s never going to be perfect.

For me, the mirrors are brilliant, really good to see behind you which is handy for commuting. I love this LCD white on black. Is it a little bit difficult to see because I’ve got the dark visor on, but when I lift it up, It’s fine. It’s perfectly adequate and It’s not designed with people riding with dark visor. So that’s not an issue, and at night, when we went on that bridge, we saw it lights out really nice. Everything is easy to read. Switch gear or typical.

The Honda PCX feels really good, under the thumb, all very well put together suspension. For this little thing, absolutely amazed by this suspension, I’m shocked by the shocks it handles really well and on these 14-inch wheels with these tires. These tires are really good. If you have got a scooter, get City grips on the Michelin City. Grips are real good tires for scooters, so all in all handling suspension, , brilliant I’ve been blown away by it, absolutely blown away amazed power. We won’t really talk about the power, because this bike is never ever going to be about power. We’ve done a top speed run around 60 MPH. This is brand new, so you might open it up a few miles an hour more, but not a lot, and that was on the flat, so maybe 65 miles an hour on the decline in a flat-out straight line. If you’re smaller than me, crouch down slightly, if you’re on the screen, that’s all you’re going to get brakes very good.

The front brake is really good. We tried it earlier on and that’ll only get better. It’s only I’m 48 miles or 50 miles. Now. This bike, so the brakes will bed in a little bit more as well as will the tires, so the tires will get more grippy and the brakes will get slightly better. The front is abs. You can yank on that front brake and that, as we did the test before it doesn’t go all over the place which is nice. The back is an ABS, so that will lock up, but on scooters you’ve got to learn to use the front and back together and the stopping power is amazing.

All in all an all around great scooter.  Actually, I’m amazed how much I like this alright. So that brings us the end of the video. The big question is, as I end all my videos is, would I borrow this bike? Would I have it in the garage and the one-to-five market is massive. It’s a huge market. I mean this is the best-selling bike or scooter on the planet. I think It’s just is sales phenomenal amounts of units it just does, and now I can see why It’s brilliant. So, would I have this in my garage 100 %? Yes!
